How to File a Claim?

Claims Processes

How the claims process works

What you do in the first hour after a loss has a direct bearing on how quickly your file is settled. The four stages below outline the general flow followed on motor, home and workplace policies alike.

  1. 1

    Make the scene safe

Look after people first. In a road traffic accident ask for a police report to be drawn up; in the event of fire, flood or theft, notify the relevant authorities. That official record is the foundation document for accepting a claim.

  2. 2

    Report the loss

Call our round-the-clock claims line or visit a branch. Your policy number, the date of the incident and a short description are enough for us to open a file. Report it as early as you reasonably can.

  3. 3

    Inspection and loss adjustment

Once the file is open, a loss adjuster is appointed where the nature of the damage calls for one. The adjuster reports on the extent of the loss and how it relates to your cover. Do let us know before sending damaged items for repair.

  4. 4

    Assessment and settlement

When the adjuster's report and your documents are complete, the file is assessed and the amount falling within cover is paid out, less the excess stated on your policy. Where repair is chosen, settlement can be made directly to the approved garage.

What to have ready when you report a claim

With the following to hand, your file can usually be opened during the first call, which avoids the delays caused by chasing missing paperwork.

  • Your policy number and the name of the insured
  • The date, time and location of the incident
  • Any police report, fire brigade report or official notification record
  • Photographs showing the damage and, where relevant, witness details

Notification deadline

Policy conditions require notification within a reasonable period of the loss coming to your attention; late notification can reduce the amount payable. If you are not sure which category your claim falls into, call the claims line and we will identify the right file type on your behalf.
